Virtual Annual Conference

ACCSES is pleased to announce that registration has opened for the 2021 ACCSES Shaping the Future Virtual Summer Conference and Annual Meeting.  This summer’s Conference is going to take advantage of the opportunities being virtual provides to introduce attendees to new ideas and new voices – and to spend some time with old friends.  The Conference will take place over six afternoons, July 20-22 and August 3-5, beginning at 1:00PM EASTERN each day.  The 2021 ACCSES Annual Meeting for ACCSES members will precede the last day of the Conference on August 5 at 12:00NOON and we will send information about that separately.

We cannot possibly have a Shaping the Future Conference without inviting a Futurist to speak!  ACCSES’s 2021 Keynote Speaker will be Alexandra Whittington, who has been recognized as one of the world’s foremost women futurists.  We are grateful that Alex has offered to lead a 90-minute session that will include discussions of (1) demographic and cultural shifts resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic; (2) the technological revolution with an overview of transformational technologies including artificial intelligence, neurotech, robotics, human enhancement, and smart technology; and (3) sustainability innovations around food, energy, transportation, housing, and design, among other topics.  Alexandra Whittington has been an adjunct lecturer at the University of Houston since 2009, where her students describe her as “passionate” about the future.  She also has authored numerous articles and co-authored/co-edited several books, including A Very Human Future (2018) and Aftershocks and opportunities:  Scenarios for a Post-Pandemic Future (2020).  If you have never heard a Futurist speak, fasten your seatbelts!  At Alex’s request, we have scheduled her session to provide ample opportunity for Q&A at the conclusion of her session.  This is a do-not-miss opportunity to get a glimpse of what the future might hold through the eyes of someone who devotes her attention to these issues!  We are very excited to have Alexandra Whittington with us this summer!

The goal of our conference is to educate, inform, and provide strategies that will help disability service provider leadership and rising leaders enhance and expand options for individuals with disabilities.  Among the many topics we plan to feature during the Conference are the following:

  • AbilityOne

  • Aging and Dementia and I/DD

  • Apprenticeships

  • Cybersecurity

  • Dentistry and I/DD

  • Disabilities and Acting

  • Diversity and Inclusion

  • Education

  • Employment (supported, customized, job discovery, expanding opportunities)

  • Epilepsy

  • HCBS and Long-Term Services and Supports

  • Mental Health and Fitness

  • Microenterprises

  • New technologies and platforms

  • Public Policy Updates

  • Social Media Marketing and Messaging

  • SUPRA and State Use

We currently are lining up speakers, and, as always, we are honored by the people who have said yes to date.  We will be sending out announcements with respect to individual speakers over the next couple of weeks.  There are still a few open slots, and we welcome your ideas and input if you have an interest in participating on a panel or presenting on a topic.  Let us know by responding to this email or reaching out to Kate at kmcsweeny@accses.org

The Conference also will include two virtual cocktail receptions – our annual Champions reception during the first week and a final night toast.  And we will have a visit from our friend Phil Hayes-Brown who will share some of the amazing new things he is working on in Australia to serve individuals with disabilities.  This Conference is about community, and we hope you will not only register but also participate and share your ideas throughout the Conference!

We want to encourage leadership and rising leaders within organizations to participate in the Conference, so we have priced the Conference accordingly.  The cost is $299 per person.  If an organization registers two employees at the full price, additional staff may attend for $100 per person.  Since it is summer and some people already have vacations planned, we also will offer a one-week rate of $175 for either week.

We are excited and really looking forward to the ACCSES Shaping the Future Summer Conference and Annual Meeting.  We hope you will join us.
